You can get to Kanchanaburi from Bkk by the train that leaves Bkk early morning. I did It a couple of years ago as a day trip, picked up a guide at the station. Visited the JEATH museum, cave temple, War cemetary and the bridge Itself. I think I will go back, and stay a few days, the river Is a nice place to relax.

Definitely worth staying a couple of nights , then you can take the train to hellfire pass and also visit the Erawan falls in addition to the standard stuff that Jerboa mentions. Some good basic accomodation by the river but for a bit more comfort stay at the River Kwai Hotel in the town centre, nightclub on site and MP next door

IMO, the bridge itself is rather "basic".
there is a small market near it in the town.
not much to see, but I am used to war memorials and museums since I lived in France.
I much more liked the Erawan falls, where I swam in one of the pools.
The nature is exceptional and there are small monkeys everywhere.

I went a few years ago, was meant to stay overnight but decided to go back on the bus to Bangkok in the evening, the hotel looked ok and all but I would have been bored shitless and didn't want to waste a night of my holiday.
Worst part about the place is all the Jap tourists wandering round smiling for photos and generally having a great time, the height of bad taste considering it was them that caused it

Did the day trip from BKK on my first visit to Thailand, then about a year later went and stayed overnight at one of the floating hotels.
For me well worth the effort, but as I had personnel reasons to visit I may have viewed it differently to most.

I like Kanchanaburi, will have to return, after to much sanuk In the bars It's a good thing to remember those who didn't come home.

Indeed Jerboa..................
As any future Thai trips for me are likely to be holiday rather than work, I want to see the country much more and this is one of the places I want to go. Odd thing is N, my previous long term friend brought me the teeshirt years ago......so I really need to do the "Been There" bit!
Cheers,
J.
